60 second documentary

TASK 1

For task 1 i was instructed to make a 60 second documentary on something in college. i was allowed to pick a partner so i decided to partnered up with Bailey Gamble to create a sixty second documentary. After watching some 60 second documentaries for inspiration we both decided it would be best to do a documentary on the Charlie and the chocolate factory production that the actors where doing. So we planned how we were going to do it.

We were also told to choose an example of documentary style so we chose interview. A interview is a documentary style use to talk to people for information.

This will be the style we will do.

Plan

For the group documentary we decided to documentary on the production of Charlie and the chocolate factory, this means we will be going around asking the actors what its like working on the production as their character as well as asking the director about their job and asking the set designers how long the props took to make and how they made them. We will also include shots of the actors rehearsing as to make the documentary look more interesting than just interviews. We will ask questions on the different things the actors have done since the start of the production.

Filming:

Visuals today – 19th of January

Interview – 20th of January

Finish on the 24th of January

Open with footage of them rehearsing with music in background which will be kept throughout. It will then go to the first person we interview where the presenter will hold a microphone and ask a few questions it will then cut to a scene with them in and then it will cut to the next interviewee and will continue till the interviews have all been completed and will end with more footage of the rehearsals.

0.10 – Opening footage of rehearsals

0.20 – Interviewee 1

0.25 – Footage of production

0.30 – Interviewee 2

0.35 - Footage of production

0.40 – Interviewee 3

0.45 - Footage of production

0.50 – Interviewee 4

0.55 - Footage of production

Production Diary

Wednesday 19th of January:

The plan for today is to watch the actors do their rehearsals so we can plan what we are going to film. After this we will then start filming some B roll to make the documentary look more interesting and give context to the documentary. We started filming at 1pm and finished at 4pm, we got some really amazing footage to use for the documentary.

Thursday 20th of January:

The plan for today is to interview at least 5 actors to give our documentary some variety. We started filming at 1pm after setting up the camera in the studio. We started calling actors up one by one for a brief ten second interview. Bailey Gamble interviewed each actor whilst I filmed and directed. Filming finished around 3pm.

Monday 24th of January:

The plan for today is to edit the Charlie and the chocolate factory interview documentary. Now that i have all the footage i will start editing at 11am.

Here is the Charlie and the chocolate documentary:

TASK 2

For this task i have to create my own 60 second documentary based outside of something outside of college. After thinking on what i could make a documentary about i decide to make it on my village Stillington which is in the middle of nowhere however it actually has a lot of history.

Documentary pitch

TASK 3

25th of January 2022

Today I had to watch a short documentary named "lift" by Mark Issacs and write about it.

Synopsis

The "lift" is a documentary made by Mark Isaacs. In the documentary he goes to an apartment building lift and stands their for 10 hours each day for 3 months. During these 3 months he gets to meet the people in the flat who use the lift and he also films the interactions that happen between him and the residents. When they come into the elevator he asks them questions such as "what did you dream about last night" or "where did you go last night" he even asks them personal questions such as "what is your greatest childhood memory". The residents warm up to him over time and interactions become more of a daily thing.

Review
I think the "lift" is a very interesting documentary as its a very different way of doing a documentary however I think the idea is amazing because in elevators you're forced to stand with who is ever in there so by him exploiting this and using it to his advantage I think is amazing.

Style of documentary
I think this was a participatory style documentary this is because the filmmaker interacts with the subject also know as the people who live in the flats.

Location
As for location even though it was awkward at the start it ended up better the more the they talked. Also as I said earlier the location is genius for using the close proximity of a lift as an advantage and because of this I also think it forces a story because they are stood in a lift for at least 30 seconds which is enough time for a forced question.

Planning
As far of planning goes I don't really think he needed any because of the documentary style and because if it was scripted it would not be as convincing, so I think it was perfect.

8th of February 2022

Today I had a lesson on Journalism questioning which is the art of getting more information out of someone. I learnt what an open ended question was and how it started. An open ended question can start with either the five W or the singular H, the five W are who, what, when and why and the H is how this is extremely useful when it comes to research. The first task i had was to write down as many questions as i could think of to ask a Gen Z person. My questions are as follows:

  • Would you ever get a job?
  • What is the obsession with selfies?
  • Do you think the coronavirus has ruined our generation?
  • why do you dress the way you do?
  • How often do you use social media?
  • Why are more people liberal now a days?
  • What political party would you vote for?
  • Why does this generation not want to join military service?
  • Do you think traditional relationships are a thing of the past?
