Final Major Project (FMP)

UAL purposal.pdf

I confirm that the attached portfolio is all of my own work and does not include any work completed by anyone but myself.

DEVELOPMENT

When I started my project I had to go through the development process which meant I had to come up with an idea for my FMP (Final Major Project) and cultivate it.

Proposal

After coming up with my idea I made a proposal so that I could present my idea professionally to my tutor, my proposal entailed my idea for my project along with the requirements I would need to make my idea a reality.

Pitch

I also made a pitch to give my tutor a visual yet professional version of my proposal.

Treatment

I made a treatment for my project idea so that I could see where the story was going to go and what the major events were going to be in it and most importantly to see how it would end.

Synopsis

I made a synopsis to basically give a short version of the idea and story I had for my project.

Script

After I had created my proposal, pitch, treatment and synopsis I then made my idea into a script. I began by making the first draft for it, after a week of writing the first draft I then decided that I would like to change it slightly so I decided to create a draft 2 which ended up being the draft that I would use through out the whole filming process of my project.

Research

The research I have done for my FMP has been through the form of watching other student short films that revolve around the topic of LGBTQ+. This is because as already stated in my Final Major Project pitch I want to create a short 10 minute film that features LGBTQ+ characters.

In The Pines

(4) In The Pines | LGBTQ+ Short Film - YouTube

"In The Pines" is about two teens that set off on a hike, pondering the idea of running from home, but a rising pandemic weighs on their decision. The reason why I liked this one so much is because its kind of similar to my project.

IT GETS BETTER

(4) IT GETS BETTER | A Gay Short Film - YouTube

"It Gets Better" is a love story between Adam, a closeted jock, and Pierre, an openly gay boy, that revolves around peer pressure, bullying and acceptance. The reason why i liked this one was because its set in high school (college) which is the exact same environment my movie will be set around.

"Out"

(4) "Out" | LGBT short - YouTube

"Out" story is Alaina's leaves her phone at her house while she's away for the weekend. Then Alaina's mother finds out her daughter's secret. The reason why I like this one is because it gives you a rough idea of what has been happening to Gavin whilst he is not at college.

Crew list

I made a crew so I knew exactly who was helping me film my project.

Director - Bailey Blyth

DOP – Jack Fowler

Script Supervisor - Jack Fowler

Editor - Bailey Blyth

Equipment list

I made an equipment list so I would know what to take with me when filming my project.

Camera, tripod, headphones, camera bag, batteries, Fig rig, microphone, dead cat

CASTING DOCUMENTATION

After all the development phase was done I then needed to cast actors so that I could audition them and then choose which actors I thought would be suitable for the different roles in my short movie. I started off by audition the actors so I sent my proposal off into the casting chat on teams to see if anyone would be interested, once the actors who were interested in the roles got back to me I set up an audition that was held in the studio room on the 4th of may and would last from 12:15-13:15.

The actors who auditioned and which role they wanted to play:

Ethan Brown auditioned for the role of Eren

Henry Walton auditioned for the role of Daniel

Joshua Durnall auditioned for the role of Gavin

Tamara Mills auditioned for the role of Emily

Script

A week before the audition I had sent the actors who were interested in a role 2 scenes from draft 1, this is so that one scene would be boring generic situation and the other scene would be intense and emotional. I did this so I could see how the actors would handle to very opposite scene scenarios, it also showed me the actors interpretation of the character they wished to play a role as.

Here are the 2 script parts I sent to each actor for the character they wanted to play:

I sent Joshua Durnall (auditioning for Gavin) Scene 2 and Scene 5 from draft 1

I sent Ethan Brown (auditioning for Eren) Scene 2 and Scene 5 from draft 1

I sent Henry Walton (auditioning for Daniel) Scene 1 from draft 1

I sent Tamara Mills (auditioning for Emily) Scene 3 and Scene 4 from draft 1

Character Breakdown

I also sent a character breakdown sheet into the chat so that the actors would have an idea of what the charcter is like.

Evaluation

In evaluation I think my filming went very well from the development phase  all the way to the actual production phase, if anything I think the production phase went very quickly compared to the development phase, which I have just recently ended. The development/pre production phase however was less stressful due to it being on computer rather than a camera, because I  personally belive that I am far better on computer than camera. If I had to improve upon anything next year it would have to be more inventive camera angles and choice of actors. The best part of my production I think is the way i have editited it to make it look good but to also make it look how I imagined it to be. In conclusion I think that my production went fine considering I have never made something on this scale before along with the limited time I was given
